23/04/15

Crit with Lucy. I had some nice feedback about my publication. It was suggested that the belly band would be a good idea, so i added them this evening. I am really happy with it and think that it really brings it all together. We also read through the evaluations and looked through each other books. I was told that my book needed some more research, but otherwise it was all fine. My evaluation needs some refining and i need to make it a little less descriptive, I will work on this over the next few days as i also work on other aspects of the project.

20/04/15

Printed publication. Happy with the print. The paper is good and i don't mind that its glossed. I decided to do a simple stitch bind using red and blue thread. I think it came out really well but the binding could be neater. I think i might go back tomorrow and re print. Today i was supposed to talk to Paul but because of the huge amount of people i want able to. Lucky i know what i plan on  doing, so i am not too bother but would have liked to know his opinions on my work. Over this week i will be refining my workflow and book, I will also be starting my evaluation.

17/04/15

Scanned and edited images. I'm really happy with the images, i had to increase the contrast and brightness so that they worked better with the acetate filtering. I have made the publication in InDesign but was an able to print i will be doing that in the Library tomorrow. I think it is the best place to do it as i cant do it on the 3rd floor and don't really want to go somewhere privet to do it. I think that the paper is good enough and it is pretty much what i wanted. Given more time i would use better paper but ohh well. I don't think it will take away from it, but it isn't something i envisioned. People suggested that i put the whole alphabet in the back page which i think is a good idea and have done so. Also i don't think i will be able to have the acetate in the pages as i don't think it fits well. I think that maybe a belly band would work well, I will have to test this once i print.

16/04/15

Over the past 2 days i printed out and cut out my typeface for the publication. I am happy with it and now i need to scan them and edit. I will be scanning them but i will have to do that at uni. I want to ring bind but i don't think i will be able to because its for more sheets and i don't have the rings. Ill be looking into it more but i think i will go with a stitch, which also allows me to use red and blue thread. I think that this will also look really nice and. I will test with it to see if it works well. Also because the 3rd floor printing room isn't open ill have to see where i can print. I want to use matt white paper but i will have to see if i can find a self feed printer.

14/04/15

Tutorial with Lucy. Shes seemed to be happy with everything and my plan for my final. She suggested on creating another medium and i think a publication would be good idea. It will allow me to present my typeface, and use the acetate to filter. I think its better than a poster as it is a more direct observation of it and will allow them to look at it in detail. I will be cutting out and scanning  the letters this week. I will be using scanning because i think it will create a clearer image and will be easier to edit. I'm thinking about ring binding but i will need to look into it. Over this week i will be creating my publication, putting music in my animation and preparing other sheets for my portfolio.

13/04/15

Printed out all of my sheets for my portfolio, and put it all together. I havent been able to do much for Oldie but the 3 videos i do have will have to do. Im not someone who has done filming, I found it really hard to come up with much that i didn't need people for. I got some feedback on my animation and type. People seem to really like them and the whole idea of the acetate type. I want to add music to my animation but i am un sure on what to use to sync it. I will look into free ones soon when i make it into a .MOV file.

10/03/15

I have been making the animation over the past few days. I think its going okay. im a little worried that it wont be good enough for the time spent. I tested with colour and decided that red and blue still works best. They are the only colours that don't seem dull or too bright like yellow. Lighting was also a slight issues but i don't think it is visible in the images. I may have to edit some images but i want to try and make the animation before because last time, i had issues with the image size. I am happy with how the splitting looks and the image changes seem smooth. It is very time consuming but it should be worth the time. The acetate is a little annoying to work with because it get static and attracts dust and sticks to other pieces. I hope its not visible in the images but i will see on a larger screen. I would like to get some opinions on it and if should have changed something. I also made a typeface which i sliced and tested with, and I have made one with the slices and used that to make ones inspired by Giorgio Sadotti. I am really happy with how they turned out. I tested slightly with colour and feel it would work well with one but had to move on from it.

02/04/15

Over the past few days i have been planning my animation in my book, and doing workflow. I have been researching types and how my slices would be implemented best. I think the bold sans serif would be best. I will do some testing to see what works best. I think i want to implement different colours with my animation but i need some acetate. I will be going to get some this weekend. I also looked at Giorgio Sadotti who has created some really interesting type face images. I would like to make something inspired by his use of type.

27/03/15

Crit went well i think. Got some good feedback and discussed my ideas with Lucy and peers. Lucy said that my images wold be better printed separately which is good for me. I still would like to see it as a publication if i can.  I think making an animation for the half term is a good plan and i hope i will be able to make some great images. I want to make a typeface if i can over the break too. I think i will try to use it for the animation if possible. I wasn't really told much to change from my plan. I may test with making a 3D object. I think it would work well if i had acrylic or something thicker. Ill try and get some over the break. The Oldie presentation was interesting but i feel i wont be able to make anything great because it not going to prioritized. Overall quite productive couple of days.

25/03/15

Unsuccessful day. I was unable to print my publication and i spent too long trying to make the .gif. It wasn't working when i was in the library. I managed to print my publication images on A4 even though it isn't how i wanted to present it. I did make the animation when i got home and i think it came out really well. Though there are images where the white background changes brightness. It is something i can fix but it would take a long time. If i were to do it again i would try and do so. Other thank that i feel the animation is good but i fear it may be too simple. People seemed to like it and suggested that the white should be edited out for the prints, which i did and its much better. Now i know that i need to reduce the size of the images to around 1080p as if larger it wont save.

24/03/15

Today went really well. I did the photo shoot of my animation. I'm really with how the frames look and the acetate looks really good when layered. The animation flows well and i think people would understand that why it said perfect. Tomorrow i will make it into a .gif and print the images that i took. I think a publication would be nice to show off the images. I have made it in in design to print tomorrow. I will most likely use a gloss white paper as the gloss makes the colours of the acetate more eye catching. This is something i will test if i am able. I was able to photograph the animation and do the publication quickly and efficiently today which game me time to do some book work.

23/03/15

Image week. Today was quite a tense day. Book needs more research and i was told that i needed more work. But when i saw Paul he said it was fine. I decided to make an stop frame animation using acetate. I tested this evening what i will do tomorrow. I created a short animation that didn't use anything special. For my image animation i will need to use bold font as my test showed that it makes it easier to slice and move. Also it will only be of the word perfect as it think it send the message well enough which allows me to make a clearer animation. I will be bringing in my own camera for it tomorrow. That means it should be high quality.

19/03/15

Crit day. Lucy and the rest of the class seemed to like what i made. It was said that it worked well that it stayed relevant to my older work. She said that my book needed more stuff in it such as research and development for print. I have work i need to print but i haven't been able to. Though i do need to add research as i haven't put any in my book even though i have done so on workflow. I saw a lot of great work. I really enjoyed Jessie's and Toms as it related to their development and they were unique and well though out. I loved the simplicity of Jessie's and the ambition in Toms. I noticed some people struggled with making it into an object, which i find understandable as it was out of our comfort zone. I personally really enjoyed this week and it gave me a chance to test other analogue method which if good for my project. Next week we have image. I want to make an animation so this weekend i will be testing and learning  the best way to do a stop frame animation. I think i will test with acetate and 3D posters. I will test if it will work this tomorrow and over the weekend.

18/03/15

I created another letter for from thick card. It works really well and i think when photographed it will look great. Mainly because it will create some great shadows and geometric shape. I am happy with the results today as i created alot of different things. I enjoy using my hand to create rather than digital images which is good because that is a focus for my project. The weave i made yesterday is not what i wanted to make initially. This is because i wanted to have something that would change letters, but i don't know how i could make something like that. Given more time i would research and test how to do so. I feel that if it would be really cool having an analogue method of making letters. It relates to my de code topic as it uses an order and rules to be used and made.

16/03/15

Object week. It was fun creating 3D things today. I initially couldn't come up with ideas but looking through my book helped me get inspiration. Looking at pixel sorting was the main inspiration for my idea. I think using grid paper works well because its easier to mark out and cut consistent sizes. The final letter looks good and im really happy with how it turned out. I want to test with a thicker paper or board. I think it would work better. Also maybe wood would work well. I want to test with both tomorrow if possible.

13/03/15

Today wasn't that productive unfortunately. I had everything ready but the amount of people doing exposed screens meant i couldn't, which was annoying because i feel i had a good image for it. It was a pixelated typeface. I feel that with screen printed it would look great and on A3. Regardless i still had my other paper stencils which i could use. I was told i could set up but it took so long for the screens to be ready and i didn't have any printing medium. I was told by the technician that he would bring some but he was very busy with all the people that it would be pointless as it wouldn't have time to do all of my layers. This is when i went to Kings Cross and did some book research such as Asian graphics now which had some great type posters which seem to have a similar colour scheme. It also contained lots of glitch esque type. It was really interesting and i did some research on one i found inspiring by Jason Lee, but i couldn't find anything on him. Though today was kind of a waste, i did manage to do some research and book work.

12/03/15

Print day. I'm happy with how my prints came out, the textures came out quite well and the waves are distinct enough to know the difference with the sand. Though the detail i had put into the sand and Cliff didn't come out very well. Also I don't think that it made the difference obvious enough. The printing process was cool. The machine we used was quick and worked very well. I also saw some really great prints such as Malones.  Tomorrow there is another opportunity to print which i will be going to. I already have my stencils ready so tonight i will be doing some prep for object. Im thinking of making a net for a glitch type but i have a feeling its been done before and would like to do something different. Iver the weekend ill research on object type and process using paper.

11/03/15

Yesterday i went to buy the card, glued and cur it to size. Today i cut out my design. I chose to use photos from my recent visit to France. The image is of a cliff face which is iconic because of its stack. Its sentimental to me for many reasons, and i think that's what Umberto wanted. Understanding a little about the process i decided that i would have to cut out quite a lot of card to create the image. The method is hard to create small detail which i found difficult because it was something i needed. I feel like his is why my image wont come out how i intended. I will have to test and see if the detail comes out tomorrow when we print. I really liked the look of Malone design. It was very angular and he used the strengths of the method very well. I wish i had chose a more line based design as i feel it would work better.

09/03/15

Print day. I only had time to make one print which was a little annoying but i am very happy with how it came out. My colour choice was good. i decided to go with magenta, and i think it work s very well with the black. I also revived some really nice feedback from peers saying that it was really nice ect. Jessie said that the would pay me if i would make a J, which was very flattering. If i have another chance to print i will, as well as the other deigns i made. I think that today went well, but could have gone better given more time. I would really like to do screen printing for my final but i would want to use more colours and maybe use exposed screens. Unfortunately i don't think i will be able to because this is the only week we can use the screens. Tomorrow I will be preparing for the Umberto task. I'm looking forward to the method but think that we should be focusing on our own projects rather than this. it just doesn't seem relevant and the fact that its supposed to be of something we experienced, rater that what we want for our project i find its distracting. But we will see if i find it relevant after i have done it.

08/03/15

Over the weekend i have made 3 different stencil designs for print week. the initial designs i made in my book were very helpful when transferring them into illustrator. Making them in illustrator allowed me to make and test multiple different designs. and also mess with colours. i decided that sticking with the CMYK colours would keep my work consistent and make it clear that it was digital based. I found it really difficult to come up with designs that i could be made with only 2 lathers. also the limitation on colours was something that i felt made it harder. Regardless of these i think that they will come out great. As long as i am able to use my own colours it should be fine. I also did some book work explaining and evaluation initial designs for these stencil designs. I found this really interesting website http://www.peopleofprint.com/ which shows lots of print makers and designers. A lot of the work on the site is relevant to printmaking skills and different techniques. I will post things i feel are relevant and useful on my info file for part 3.

03/03/15

Progress tutorial. Paul was happy with the direction going and work i was doing but he said i needed to define the rules i was going to use for my type and how i wanted to progress further. He said to  create a systematic process to your glitch abstraction of letter forms which focus on slices and to use this as a code to generate and deconstruct type. I agree that i need to decide what looks best and stick with it and i want to create something consistent to others i have made. If i can i would also like to test with animation and printing. I was also suggested to look at Jurriaan Schrofer, Fraser Muggeridge ‘MegaFont’, and Unit Editions ‘Type Plus’ which are said to be helpful and could be inspiring. I feel a little stuck still and un sure how i want to proceed with this project. I feel that i have focused too much on one thing and i should have tested with scanning (which i meant to do but haven't found the time) and images. I feel like my ideas have potential for both but i keep focusing on things i have done already. I want to try different things to have a larger variety of testing.

26/02/15

Crit. I received some good feedback even though my images were not presented very well. They seemed to like the colour choices and the splitting. They also seemed very interested about the pixel sorting process and i had some good feedback saying that it worked well with my aims for the project. After the class was set to plan for the next 3 weeks which we had workshops. We were told to create a project outline for what we wanted to achieve and come up with ideas. We have print first in 2 weeks. Print is something i have planned to use already and i know what i want to do, but we are also having an embossing tutorial so i want to try that as its something i haven't done before. We also have something with Umberto which sounds interesting but I'm not sure how it can be linked with my project. Ill have to see what specific things we are supposed to do before choosing on a specific designs.

25/02/15

One day project. I have made and tested with type and filtering colours. I used photoshop to edit and cut these letters to distort them. I'm really happy with how it turned out, but i think i need test with how many slices are in the letters. It will allow me to decide which rule works best and i can ouse it to make the decisions on all my next developments. I also tested this type in pixel sorting. Due to my lack of experience it didn't work very well but i think the effects look nice. If i can use the program better and be able to distort all the coil ours it will make something really interesting. Im very happy with what i made today and i have done a lot of extensive testing in a fairly short amount of time. Though it doesn't feel like it if like a final outcome i hope that it is well received at tomorrows crit.

22/02/15

Day was mostly spent leaning more processing. I was able to make a code that works but i don't know how to change the direction or colors it moves. This is something that will need more research and testing, but the stuff i made today came out well. i was able to make a horizontal pixel sort type. I think horizontal works best but testing colors may change my opinion. I also did some research and looked at a lot of different types of glitches and distortions. I saw the use of a scanner and its something i would like to test with. It caused the black and white image to have color and the false color is something that i would like to see with type. I should have done more today but got distracted with other things. Next week i want to test with colors and fruitier pixel sorting.

21/02/15

Today i researched and learnt how to use processing. I am not yet able to pixel sort as the program is very complex for beginners. I am going to have to write my own code for pixel sorting or find one online but its hard and i wasn't able to find any. I spent about 4 hours testing and learning how to make code, and so far i haven't been able to make anything. But I think i will need to do more tomorrow as i have high hopes once i know how to use it. I have also made some glitch typefaces and a binary one. These are just type designs and are not full types yet. I want to ask my peers for opinions on which one to develop and if i should test anything else. The binary time i had some issues with and want to test further. The binary is something that i want to test further, i would like to see how i can use it to make image, and its effects on it. I also tested pixel sorting on type and had some great results. Though it wasn't me who made the code, it allowed me to test sorting type. I am very happy with the results, and found that doing each letter by themselves gives better results. This is probably due to the higher amount of black pixels. I want to test further tomorrow and hopefully learn a code which i can use.

19/02/15

Library research: I looked at different books and online designers. I had a look at 'a computer in the art room', 'glitch: design imperfection' and 'visual music'. These were books that have a focus on computers and their uses in design. I fond them helpful as they had pieces with examples of how they were made and the processes used. Kim Asendorf is an artist i research online that uses a program to naturally sort pixels. It the process of moving certain pixels in a direction to create a distorted image. I would like to test this process of pixel sorting on type as i haven't seen any examples and feel it would fit well with my ideas. Work he has done ranges from installation to photography but he has a consistent digital distortion style. He uses a lot of the same colors and shapes in his work because i think he waste to keep this consistency in his work. Apparently he is the artist who made pixel sorting popular with people online this is probably due to how natural they seem when being distorted and damaged. He creates beauty through the destruction of images. He used a program called processing so tomorrow ill be learning and testing with it.

17/02/15

Science Museum: Same as yesterday. Took photos of mechanisms, typefaces and anything i though could be relevant. I will print these images and stick them in my sketchbook. I got to see the new exhibition Cravings: Can your food control you? It was really interesting and they had some really well designed illustrations to explain how the digestion process works. Its not hugely relevant to my direction but their use of type was well thought out. They also had some interactive sections that i thought really well and showed how engaging something can be when its well designed. I didn't go to the V&A because i didn't feel the need as the exhibitions were not that relevant. In the science museum they have an area about old computers and coding. it spoke about binary and html, and how the language of computers change and develop. The use of code seems to date back really far even beyond modern technologies. Its something i didn't know and found interesting and feel that this new knowledge allows me to explore older and less known forms of code. I want to look into different fonts that early computers used and see how, if at all the font we use now have changed.

16/02/15

Tate Modern: Today i was just researching in the Tate. I wasn't looking for anything in particular but more something that may relate through process or colour. I saw works of Ellsworth Kelly to be the most inspiration due to his use of colour and the grid systems he used. I also saw some posters made for russia, and their iconic use of bold type is something that made them so powerful. I want to look further into the use of type and some key iconic type designers. We did plan on going to the design museum as well but we took too long at the Tate. I will be going to the Science museum and possible the V&A tomorrow to further research and come up with ideas.

12/02/15

Lucy read through my PPP. She said it was good i just needed to change a few grammatical mistakes. Also to make it more clear that i wanted to research into the contrast of digital and analogue. I was happy with the feed back as she understood and seemed to be interested in the direction i wanted to go in. The task we were set for the reading week allows me to test different process and making typefaces. I want to look into pixel sorting and code and feel that there are lots of possibilities for it. The rest of the day i looked at book in the library on typography to get an idea of how technology had changed typography.

11/02/15

Day was spent researching and writing my project proposal. So far i am hugely inspired by Sam Winston and his work with decoding what items mean to us. I feel that this fits into the direction i want to go into, and the way he was thinking about objects was interesting. I linked him in my proposal and feel that the overall quality of my proposal was good. It might need some refining but because i had the bibliography and time plan to finish, i feel its good enough. I had a lot of issues with the bibliography because the UAL library website was down and i was unable to look for books i wanted to research. My bibliography seems a little thin, but because it is the first week and don't know what direction i want to go in, i feel its enough until i have more guidance. I am really keen to look into type and its abstract uses in the world. I am looking forward to the potential for this project and how my ideas will develop.

10/02/15

The talk we had today was really inspiring. My favorite talk was by KIN because of the variety and quality of work that have done. His interactive work was really interesting and the fact that he doesn't want to work for companies that do bad things such as BP, is quite honorable and makes them seem really down to earth. when i had researched them before the talk i had seen that hey had made a lot of different illustrated books, which i found out were made by children using an interactive app. I though this was really cleaver and good for getting the youth into art and design. I felt that the other talk were also very interesting and Abake spoke about how he stated his business and how it developed into a collaboration of many different people and professions. His business model (he described it as a potato) was cool. the fact that they are partners and its not like a pyramid system seemed really efficient and allowed for collaborations between more people. time video was also very interesting and showed me hoe skilled and knowledgeable the tutors are in their fields.

The CSM collection we went to after i was interesting but the object i had didn't really relate to my project in many ways. Although some of the objects were really cool, i wish  we had more time to look at all of them. If i have the chance again i would like to have a closer look at the cutelry which looked really cool.

09/02/15

Today i hadn't done enough preparation to present research. This was due to printing issues. I felt that the images i had printed were adequate but didn't consider that we would have to talk about them in detail. I wasn't able to give enough information about who they were or the materials they used. Next time i will make sure the artists have been throughly research so that i can help and inspire other students and help myself with coming up with ideas.

Part 3 of our proposals confused me because i wasn't sure what kind of direction i wanted to go into. I still am, but feel that my decision to focus on space and order allowed me to make a start. But the fact that i wasn't able to talk to Paul, i think put me back as I'm not sure how i should improve on it. I should have done more work today but got distracted. Though i do feel that the work i did today was of a good standard, the quantity was lacking. In future i need to make sure that i am focused and know what i am doing before the day starts. When i make my time plan i will be able to work more efficiently and effectively.
